Blue Lagoon Iceland Plans Spring 2018 Opening for The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland
Blue Lagoon Iceland, one of the 25 Wonders of the World, is proud to announce the spring 2018 opening of its first luxury offering, the Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland. Debuting on a private inlet of the UNESCO Global Geopark, the 62-suite Retreat will also invite guests to experience the Retreat Spa, the Retreat Lagoon, and Moss Restaurant. A longtime vision realized, the Retreat will be brought to life by those who originally developed the Blue Lagoon—Dr. Grímur Sæmundsen, founder & CEO of Blue Lagoon Iceland; Sigríður Sigþórsdóttir of Basalt Architects, who designed the Blue Lagoon spa complex, Silica Hotel, and LAVA Restaurant; and Sigurður Þorsteinsson, Chief Creative Officer of Milan-based Design Group Italia.
“The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland has been on the horizon for many years, and we are honored to share it with the world,” says Dr. Grímur Sæmundsen, founder & CEO of Blue Lagoon Iceland. “We're confident that this new luxury experience will raise the bar for the transformation and growth of our business, as well as the general tourism industry in Iceland, while also remaining respectful of our incredible natural surroundings and the Blue Lagoon's founding principles.”
Breathtaking Accommodations
The Retreat, set in the centuries-old lava and surrounded by the Blue Lagoon's revitalizing waters, will offer guests an experience like no other in Iceland. Each of the 62 suites will feature a minimalist aesthetic designed to bring the dramatic terrain of Iceland in-room with floor-to-ceiling windows, as well as human centric lighting set to mimic the phases of the sun. Arranged on two levels, the suites on the lower level feature private terraces, providing views of the lava and the surrounding lagoon, with some offering guests direct access to the lagoon. The upper level suites will offer private balconies overlooking the moss-covered horizon, showcasing the stunning views that change with the weather and the light.
A Subterranean Wellness Experience
Built into an 800-year-old lava flow on the south shore of the Blue Lagoon, the Retreat Spa will transport the mind and body to new dimensions of peace and rejuvenation through nature, design, and the radiant powers of geothermal seawater. Offered to both overnight guests of the Retreat and day guests, the Spa features a steam room built into the lava rock; a cold well; in-water massages; treatment rooms offering bench massages and beauty treatments; a Spa restaurant; and much more. Exclusive to the Retreat is the Blue Lagoon Ritual, a spacious sanctuary of interconnected chambers where guests cover their bodies with the three treasures of geothermal seawater—silica, algae, and minerals. The Retreat Spa will also allow guests to access the Retreat Lagoon, a new Blue Lagoon experience where the mineral-rich water flows around the Retreat through a terraced concourse of lava.
Icelandic Culinary Celebrations
The Retreat will offer guests a journey through Iceland's reinvention and heritage at the upscale Moss Restaurant. With each dish, the culinary journey leads guests through the country's seas, mountains, rivers, and farms, highlighting the purest seasonal and regional ingredients. Moss Restaurant will also feature a 10-seat Chef's Table made of lava rock that was quarried onsite, and the Wine Cellar, which was built into a cavern of multi-hued, frozen-in-time lava that erupted in 1226.
Exploring the Land of Fire & Ice
Guests of the Retreat will also be invited to partake in complimentary daily yoga sessions as well as guided hikes through the UNESCO Global Geopark in which the Retreat sits. Additionally, the Retreat will offer guests exclusive access to Iceland's lesser-traveled, unique surroundings including lava hiking in a lunar environment, one-of-a-kind Northern Lights viewing tours, and much more.

About Blue Lagoon Iceland
Founded in 1992 to expand the pleasures and unlock the benefits of geothermal seawater, Blue Lagoon Iceland has evolved into a company that is focused on transformative spa experiences, research and development, skin care, sustainability, culinary enjoyment, and the convergence of hospitality and wellness. Located in the heart of an 800-year-old lava plain on the Reykjanes Peninsula, the company, in all its manifestations, seeks to unify the manmade and the natural. Originally based on a single entity—the Blue Lagoon—the company now operates a 35-room hotel, a restaurant, a thriving R&D center, and a renowned line of skin care. With societal uplift as one of its core mandates, all of Blue Lagoon's concerns are powered by sustainable energy. In 2018, the company will complete a significant expansion, opening the Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland.
