Deutsche Hospitality Becomes the Latest Member of the International Tourism Partnership
New Corporate Social Responsibility section set up at Corporate Office has been up and running since the start of the year Frankfurt am Main, 01 February 2018
Deutsche Hospitality has joined the International Tourism Partnership (ITP) and will now seek to drive forward the topic of sustainability together with twelve other leading hotel groups. Ecological and social responsibility has been one of the company's major focuses for some considerable time. Joining forces with other representatives of the sector in this way will now enable synergies to be pooled and a common approach to be taken towards the development of solutions.
In 2017, the ITP formally adopted its objectives for the period leading up to 2030 and thus defined the main aspects of cooperation between the members involved. The aim is for the hotel branch to take the UN Sustainable Development Goals as its basis in order to achieve successes in the fields of CO2 emissions, water, human rights and youth unemployment. Deutsche Hospitality has been given a seat around the ITP table with immediate effect and will be working to help draw up long-term solutions to the sustainability issues currently confronting the sector. Cooperation is being pursued under the banner of “everyone together can achieve more than each party operating alone”.
The ITP has been bringing the world's leading hotel groups together under a single umbrella for 25 years. Members convene to develop practical ideas for the sustainable use of resources. Some of these are already being applied within the branch. All of this means that hotels right across the globe are receiving support as they strive to improve their sustainable business practices. Examples of recent successes include the Hotel Water Measurement Initiative (HWMI), which is helping to monitor water consumption. This allows hotels to identify and implement resource-friendly measures.
The sustainability initiatives instigated by Deutsche Hospitality focused on consumption of resources from the very outset. Virtually all of the group's hotels in Europe have achieved ISO 14001 certification as part of the Environmental Management System. In 2015, energy management pursuant to ISO 50001 was integrated at Corporate Office as a further key element of the process. The holistic approach adopted by Deutsche Hospitality also encompasses the social field, which includes the provision of long-term support for humanitarian aid projects. Deutsche Hospitality has sent out another clear signal by establishing a special section for Corporate Social Responsibility at Corporate Office. This serves once again to underline the significance the company attaches to this topic within the scope of its global operations. Since the start of the year, this section has been headed up by Lars Wahnschaffe whose remit is to drive forward corporate responsibility across the whole group. Joining the ITP represents a key step in terms of the implementation of sustainability goals.
“Corporate Social Responsibility is an essential part of our corporate philosophy,” said Thomas Willms, CEO of Steigenberger Hotels AG. “We are looking forward to creating a united front which will enable us to reach our own objectives as well as making an important contribution together with the whole of the hotel sector."
Fran Hughes, Director of the ITP, welcomed Deutsche Hospitality to the organisation's board. “We are delighted to have such a highly respected company in our midst and to be able to benefit from its expertise.”
